In 1940, Glen Miller’s orchestra recorded that foxtrot hit on a 78 rpm record to cheer up a nation at war. My parents and grandparents loved the song (still visible on YouTube) about coming home to the people and places we love.
Six years ago, I became a snowbird that spends spring and summer in Central Minnesota near family on our farm. But come fall, I migrate south following Canadian Geese, Sandhill Cranes, and more wise birds to the warmer climate and wonderful people of the Mid-South.
By traveling 890 highway miles, I enjoy the best of both worlds and experience two springs, two falls, one short winter, a long summer, and people I love at both ends of the journey. FaceTime, iPhones, and other gadgets shrink the distance. My world is expanded, and I’m twice blessed.
My older son drove that distance in one long day to check on his mom. He liked what he found. I drive it in two days. I love learning about other parts of the country which also helps the World Geography course I teach online.
In Minnesota, I’ve met more Amish neighbors. I visit their homes and they visit mine. I’m the “driver” for them on some occasions. I’ll miss them through the winter but stay in touch. I’ve also gained more non-Amish friends in this town of 3,000 that has made this summer special.
My other town in Mississippi has a population of 15000. Because one of my best author friends lives down the street, I had the easiest possible transition to a new location. Her friends became mine. She taught me important weather warnings and the best businesses and places to go.
When you read this, I’ll be packing for my trip south. I change my route each time to absorb new scenery and history.
If you divide your year, where else do you or would you go? When you plan vacation getaways, do you choose mountains, beaches, or something in-between? What’s your best travel discovery so far? Which places do you revisit again and again?
Destinations don’t have to be expensive to be great. My best ones are linked to important people in my life. I once traveled alone in beautiful Greece but would have enjoyed it much more fun with family or friends along.
When you notice bird migrations overhead filling the sky highway, think about where they’re going and what they’ll see. I love this season of life when I’ve become one of them.
