Today isn’t quite the beginning of spring nor the end of winter, but we’re close. In nineteen days our planet’s axis will bring us to a new season. We have a choice of looking back to the past or forward to the future.
Here in NE Mississippi the polar vortex brought the once-in-ten-year ice/snow storm that stopped everything. Icy roads and no snow removal equipment meant no mail delivery for nine days and no garbage removal for two weeks. When some of us ventured to Walmart, we found few people and shelves empty of bread because the in-store bakery didn’t operate plus many other shortages. Some grocery stores closed; but we didn’t have it as bad as Texas.
We sheltered inside but looked out for each other. When my neighbors’ furnace failed, they had many offers of places to stay. One friend told me to pack a bag and come stay if our power failed, as she had alternative heat. Most of us had what we needed and did fine.
Two days ago, our temperature hit 75 F and spawned tornado warnings but also made spring bulbs shoot up. Here’s my brave blue Dutch iris. Sweet-smelling hyacinths, daffodils, and narcissus are close behind. That was enough to make some of us rush to the Garden Centers cheerfully buying in anticipation—what a beautiful word!
Events celebrated around the world today include National Banana Cream Pie Day, National Old Stuff Day, Texas Independence Day, and National Read Across America Day celebrated on the birthday of children’s author, Dr. Seuss. Six of his titles will be dropped because of “racist stereotypes portraying people in wrong or hurtful ways.” I can’t believe it was ever that gifted author’s intent. He fostered joy and imagination in all of us through whimsical rhymes and art while helping millions love reading.
It’s our choice in any situation. Look back? Or forward? We’re writing a fresh slate in a new year. Let’s make the most of it with no regrets every single day.
Please share what you’re most looking forward to in this next season.
