I’m not sure if life tasks take longer these days or I’m slowing down. Besides writing, I teach two online university classes with 50 students and they need lots of individual attention.
In less than a month, I’ll head south again. In the meantime I’m celebrating the October 1st print and eBook release of my Amish book, Mercy’s Rose, that I’ve written and rewritten for four years.
When I bought this Minnesota farm fourteen years ago, a chicken farmer in his 90’s was my neighbor. I didn’t know he had sold until a fine young Amish man and his brother-in-law made my doorbell ring a lively tune and introduced themselves. I soon met Jake’s wife and son. They now have three children. His wife introduced me to their friends and relatives. I’ve visited in their homes and are welcome in mine. I drive them places, especially in emergencies, and they matter to me.
I didn’t plan to write an Amish book, but as our relationships grew, so did the story idea for Mercy’s Rose. I printed out the first one-fifth of my manuscript and had a young Amish woman read it. I told her if she was offended in any way, I’d drop the project. They matter to me more than any book I write. She said it was fine. I enjoy them as neighbors. As I’ve known them more, I gained deeper understanding. My book’s ending changed as I saw neighbors face real-life conflicts I couldn’t have imagined in the beginning.
This photo shows how my book begins, but in a different season
I’m delighted that Carrie Schmidt AKA Meez Carrie’s on her blog at Readingismysuperpower.org with over two million readers reviewed Mercy’s Rose saying, “I enjoyed the romance aspect but even more I loved how Caleb values Mercy’s input and gives her room to become the woman God created her to be.” Read the book and see if you agree.

Delores
