The word Zwatsch (rhymes with thatch) came to me at dawn Dec. 31st as I considered the end of 2021 while looking forward to the good things we want 2022 to bring. What is the origin of Zwatsch? (Hopefully the creativity of my sleep-refreshed brain.) If you’re gullible I’ll say it’s a noun from the German verb Zwatscher meaning to re-do or refocus, as in rethatching roof cover in olden times to replace dried out material with fresh living green stuff that keeps out rain, When necessary, it also provides rooftop forage for animals carefully tethered on short ropes. (Yes, my sense of humor is intact.
I loved seeing thatched buildings in England and Denmark. Two of my great grandmothers grew up in sod houses in pioneer days. As a kid, I saw one no longer there in southern Minnesota on the Minnesota River. Years back, friends and I pioneered a good small Christian agricultural community in northern British Columbia, Canada. There’s lots of story material there. Our log medical dispensary had an excellent, beautiful sod roof. (Notice the moose antlers on top.)
What’s that got to do with 2022? It’s the important positive attitude when looking back through 2021 and seeing projects from A to Z you didn’t quite finish—like time to rethatch a used up roof that needs it.
It’s not too late. Instead of feeling regret or guilt, 2022 is your chance for a fresh start Do-Over! Check the present rooftop cover of any project you’re considering re-doing. Evaluate whether it’s sound enough for continued use or time to cut and stack new green growing material to make things fresher and better.
This concept works for all goals or undertakings from A to Z (or Zed if you’re in Canada or the British Empire). Maybe that’s why it’s spelled Zwatsch.
I’m declaring National Zwatsch Day each January 1st. It’s fun, refreshing, and low-cost. When completed, new roofs gives greener vistas raising hopes for better outcomes. It helps us look forward with expectation, not backward with regret.
I plan to enjoy Zwatsch Day and new outlooks all year. Please join me.
Tell us what project you want to re-do in coming days to see in a new light and achieve better creative results than you dreamed of.
The final needed ingredient? Have fun!
