This year is a Leap Year. Congratulations to all February 29th babies who again have a birth day to celebrate! Leap Year is a strange term. We leap at what? A day forward, one day added every four years to balance the annual four-hour gain in earth’s rotation to synchronize its astronomical clock?
I see two advantages – February 29th babies stay youthful. Plus, they and we all qualify for the legal reversed dating practices allowed in Sadie Hawkins Day festivities on that extra day.
Sadie Hawkins Day as an American folk event and pseudo-holiday introduced in Al Capp’s classic hillbilly comic strip, Li’l Abner. His comic inspired Sadie Hawkins events where women may chase men to ask men for a date or dance.
Al Capp’s cartoon says it all. Part of the fun is seeing how fast the men run. Or if they run very slowly and allow themselves to be caught. One of the happiest long-lasting marriages I’ve seen involved a woman who recognized a good thing proposing to her long-term boyfriend who was too shy to ask.
How do you celebrate February 29th? What do you like best (or least) about an extra day being added to our calendar every four years?
