The first time I came to Israel, I didn’t dream it would lead to more visits. My first stay lasted amazing days and made me want to return so much that I worked the whole next summer conducting forestry vegetation surveys in the Canadian bush to pay for it. Even that wasn’t enough. So, after seven visits lasting 101 days, I’m now there for my eighth time.
What keeps me and so many returning? Partly the scenery. Definitely the inspiring history–but also the people. I’ve been coming since 1984, over 35 years. I don’t just return to special places, but also to people who over time have become lasting friends and with whom I stay in touch to know how things really are in Israel.
One friend from California after 40 years is a citizen totally transplanted into Israel. Tour guides of Jewish and Christian faith glow with love for the facts they share. Men and women in Israel’s Defense Force welcome American visitors and sometimes share chocolates. Strangers on the street or near currency exchange machines earnestly thank us for coming to visit and supporting their nation.
After a while, Israel begins to belong to us a bit, too. I show my special favorite spots to others I bring. Not just Qumran and the Essene community where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, but the Qalia Kibbutz next door that operates a date plantation and guest houses besides Qumran itself, and in my opinion, the best private beach resort on the Dead Sea. In Jerusalem’s old city, several shopkeepers now recognize me and give me discounts when I bring in new customers.
My passport contains many stamps now plus I’ve put on some years. I successfully interact with the same upper-class property manager and refer others to her, too. As I stand tonight in one of her beautiful rental suites with a view overlooking the old city, I wonder if this will be my last trip here. I sincerely hope not.

Good morning Delores! Pastor Julie Melberg encouraged me to greet you! I met you sometime ago when Julie and I were close knit in her Ministry. I recall you talking about your teachings on the Apostle Paul. I have since bought a children’s book and have heard and prayed for your family as I am a prayer warrior for the Lord. It is very exciting to read all that you share about your travels in such an awesome way. I love it 🥰 Continued Blessings on your Miniseries. Liz Boeshans
