Each year I love seeing winter leave and spring arrive. In northeast Mississippi where I am now, the first welcome dandelion just bloomed. With warmer weather, my daffodils leaves are now 4” tall. I’ll post photos of them blooming soon.
We celebrated Groundhog’s Day two days ago, one of my favorite holidays. In Washington state where I lived as a kid, it heralded the beginning of spring–the time to find the first pussy willows bursting from bare branches and to get out the lawn mower. Each February 2nd these days, I like watching Punxsutawney Phil emerge at Gobbler’s Knob northeast of Pittsburgh, though I think few believe his predictions.
On Groundhog’s Day two years ago, Strong Currents, Book Two in my Columbia River Undercurrents Series, was published. Part of it retells life events experienced by my Austrian-born college roommate, Ingeborg Oberweger’s family. Inge confirmed details and knew it was being published though she sadly passed away two weeks before its release. If you’re a WWII buff, besides fictionalized but true events in Germany and the South Pacific, you’ll discover little-known facts that occurred in America’s Pacific Northwest in 1942-1943 when our nation was at greater risk than the government acknowledged.
Most of us switch from babying indoor plants to watching spring flowers bloom in our yards. Sunshine increases, the days are longer, and we feel more energy. It’s time to consider the projects we’ll do in warmer weather.
What about you? What are your favorite signs of spring? Whatever your choices, have fun welcoming this beautiful and wonderful season!
